Meet the tutor
Hello, I’m Andrew Durban, a professional double bass player and music theory specialist. I studied for five years at the Royal College of Music in London, earning diplomas in both performance and teaching.
Since then I have enjoyed a career performing with some of the world’s leading period-instrument orchestras, including the English Baroque Soloists, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and the Academy of Ancient Music. I have performed on more than 50 recordings and have toured widely in the UK and internationally.
In addition to my music qualifications, I hold a Certified Digital Marketing Professional (CDMP) qualification, which helps me run my online teaching securely and professionally.
Alongside performing, I am passionate about teaching. I know from experience that music theory can seem daunting — but with the right guidance it becomes logical, engaging, and rewarding. My pupils currently enjoy a 100% pass rate in ABRSM Grade 5 Theory, and my approach is always patient, clear, and tailored to the individual.
As a student at the Royal College of Music, my very first professional engagement was playing Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with Roger Norrington and the London Classical Players — a groundbreaking performance later recorded at EMI’s Abbey Road Studios. That experience set me on a 20-year journey performing baroque, classical and romantic repertoire with some of the world’s leading period-instrument ensembles, and it continues to inspire the way I play and teach today.
