ABRSM Exam Entry & Guidance
Who enters the exam?
Students (or their parents/guardians) are responsible for entering directly with ABRSM. You can find full details and register on the ABRSM website.
I will always advise you on the best time to book, so that there is enough opportunity for practice and revision. Many students benefit from a short period of consolidation after completing their lessons, during which we focus on past papers and exam-style questions to build confidence.
Online exams
ABRSM now offers an on-demand service for Music Theory exams. This means you can book at a time that suits you, and then have 28 days to log in and complete the test.
The exam is taken at home (or any suitable location) using a laptop or desktop computer with:
a webcam and microphone
a stable internet connection
a quiet, well-lit room with no interruptions
Before the exam, you may be asked to confirm the candidate’s identity and details. During the exam, ABRSM requires normal exam conditions — no help from others and no prohibited materials.
Full technical requirements are listed on the ABRSM website.
Public venue exams
For those who prefer not to take the exam online, ABRSM also offers public venue exams at designated exam centres. These take place on set dates during the year, and may be a better choice for families who prefer a traditional, supervised environment.
Results
Results are issued by ABRSM once marking is complete. If there are any technical issues during an online exam, ABRSM has procedures in place to support candidates and resolve problems.
